BRIEF TITLE: SYRIA
|
Brief:
To
encourage the admittance of Syrian refugees into the UK and other Western
countries. This is to be done by launching a multi-media campaign which
highlights the flood of refugees out of Syria that has occurred as a result
of atrocities committed in the civil war. The campaign will function by
informing audiences of the huge numbers of refugees, and the extreme
conditions in refugee camps. These statistics and accounts of hardship will
then be presented alongside the incredibly low number of Syrian refugees that
have been allowed into the UK and other Western countries.
The
campaign will function through use of both print and web media. Printed media
will include posters and an information leaflet/flyer. Web media will include
informative images to be shared on social media, website proposals (or a
functioning blog), and an online petition.

Background:
The
comparisons planned in the brief will highlight the inconsistency of British
foreign policy regarding the subject. Whereas the Foreign Office claimed it
would offer support and asylum to Syrian refugees, it has only allowed 55 to
enter the country since the conflict began, a paltry number when compared
with the 3 million+ refugees who have fled the country.

Considerations:
It
is important to distinguish between the actions of some European countries
and others. Not all EU members have been so strict. Sweden has reportedly
allowed the permanent residence of a few thousand Syrian refugees, with more
expected in the coming months.
Equally
it is important not to belittle the aid work of many EU countries.
Collectively the European Union has donated a huge amount of money and
resources to the aid work currently going on in the region. The UK has been
one of the larger donors within this sector.
A
further consideration with regards to the actual completion of the brief is
that figures on refugee movements and numbers are constantly changing. Although
web media can be kept up to date, printed media will swiftly become out of
date as numbers change.

least 1 poster design informing audiences about the plight of Syrian refugees
and the sheer enormity of the situation.
A
concertina (or similar) booklet/brochure containing more in depth information
regarding the increase in refugee numbers and the UK/EU’s apparent
unwillingness to grant refugees asylum.
Informative
digital images to be shared and circulated on social media.
Website
proposals / functioning blog.
Online
petition.

Target Audience:
There
are two types of target audience within this brief. The first of which is
somewhat more specific, and is comprised of people who may already have an
interest in the Middle-East and foreign affairs, but have not yet realised
the human ramifications of the civil war and the West’s apparent
unwillingness to grant asylum.
The
second type of target audience is far broader, and consists of anyone who
would support the notion of allowing more Syrian refugees into the UK. For
this reason one would aim to target those who have a positive notion of
immigration, namely those on the left hand side of the political spectrum.
Such a target audience would probably be younger (under 40) as older people
generally have a more conservative view on immigration.

Tone of Voice:
The
tone of voice for this project should be very serious. Any attempt at light-heartedness
would belittle the severity of the situation being campaigned for.
Furthermore, a serious tone will be necessary to impress how dire the
situation is upon those who do not have an understanding of it.
Despite
this, being overly negative should be avoided, as this can easily trigger
apathy and disinterest, a common sentiment regarding overly depressing media.

Research :
Visualising Palestine. Good use of numbers and presentation to allow for clearer identification of injustices. Similar methods can be used in the Syria campaign, as numbers provide a more objective view of affairs. The question within my work is to what extent the numbers are presented in a compelling way.

Evaluation :
One clear fact about this brief has been that there have been so many facts. The amount of data that has been trawled through astounds me sometimes. It was necessary however, for otherwise I would not have been able to gain a clear understanding of the data, and how to present it. One immediate change that would be made if I were to carry out this brief again in the future would be to hire a researcher! That would save monumental amounts of time, that could be far better spent experimenting with communication techniques.
The reading of Edward Tufte's Envisioning Information has been incredibly helpful throughout this brief. Though I had briefly read his work before, I have been reading it in depth over the course of this project (somewhat by coincidence). His messages about clearing 'chartjunk' have really hit home, and allowed me to make the crucial decision to drop the emotive features initially considered. While a certain percentage of the audience would respond better to those visual clues, it is not worth the immense sacrifice that is made by the loss of data clarity.
In the future, I would maybe consider other formats besides a printed publication. A web pdf would also be available on the petition / website, however it would be interesting to think how the information could be communicated outside of typical channels such as media supplements and information on existing sources. Such methods imply a pre-existing interest on the part of the audience member. For true communication to be made, the message needs to reach those who are not looking for it.
A further change that would be made to my process in the future would be an increased level of documentation of aesthetic decisions as I work. This would allow me to make more informed informed decisions on efficacy and consistency.
